More than 25 million names are registered under .com, .net, and .org, though only a small number of registered names are in active use.
Millions become available at the speed of over 900,000 per month. Many are immediately taken — for most people, it's almost impossible to compete for the best names.

Formed in October 1998, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a non-profit, private sector corporation formed by a broad co-alition of the Internet's business, technical, academic, and user communities. ICANN has been recognized by the U.S. Government as the global consensus entity to coordinate the technical management of the Internet's domain name system, the allocation of IP addresses, the assignment of protocol parameters, and the management of the root server system.
ICANN is dedicated to preserve the operational stability of the Internet; to promote competition; to achieve broad representation of the global Internet community; and to coordinate policy through private sector, bottom-up, consensus-based means.
ICANN is located at http://www.ICANN.org.
URL stands for Universal Resource Locator and is a unique identifier for your web address. Your URL contains your domain name. An example of a URL is http://www.domainpeople.ca.
No two web sites can have the same URL. Whoever registers a domain name first gets to use it in their URL. This is why it is important to register your domain name before someone else does.
Practically speaking, your web address is the name that represents your Internet identity, your online brand. Your customers will remember this name and use it to find out about your products and services. And since no two parties can ever hold the same web address simultaneously, your Internet identity, is totally unique.
Technically speaking, a domain name represents your Internet address. While computers use Internet Protocol (IP) numbers to locate each other on the Internet, people find them hard to remember. Therefore, web addresses were developed to permit the use of easily remembered words and phrases to identify Internet addresses.
For example, the web address "cedgecom.com" represents our Web site Creative Edge Communications. When you type "cedgecom.com" in a web browser or send email to me at cedgecom.com, the Domain Name System (DNS) translates "cedgecom.com" into the IP numbers used by the network and connects you to Creative Edge Communications.
A domain name may have a maximum of 63 characters (letters, numbers, dashes) plus the 4 characters for the extensions such as [.COM]. This allows a domain name (including the extension) to be 67 characters long.
Note: It is generally a good idea to have the shortest domain name possible as your customers/visitors may find it easier to type. This is why we've chosen to name Creative Edge Communications, Inc.'s web address to cedgecom.com.
